A disastrous mother of four is left with a huge hole in her back garden after a row with her builder over an extension.

Michaela Madewell splashes £20,000 on a one-story add-on to her home in Colchester, EssexSo her disabled son had somewhere to play safely.

She says she was promised the work would be completed in six to eight weeks, but Adam Parsons of Prestige Loft & Extensions never completed the work.

However, he claims that Michaela failed to apply for the right permission to build a 9-inch Anglian water sewer pipe that runs beneath the garden, so he had no choice but to stop the work.

Somehow, mom’s lawn is now so deep in moat that she can’t let her kids play outside.

And she’s demanding that Adam pay her back as soon as possible so she can crack with the construction.

Michaela, who found the firm on Chektrade, where it had positive reviews, said: “There are huge piles of clay everywhere.

“It’s just a mess, a destruction site, a pigsty.

“All I want is my money back and my home and garden safe for my kids.”

Michaela said she plans to convert her current living room into a bedroom for one of her children, and the extension will become the living room.

“It was going to change our lives, especially for my son, for the better,” she said.

“The builder wrote a contract and he took the first payment as deposit, then the second one in advance for the water pipe.

“But the job was bad and then he came up with excuses why he couldn’t go.”

Michaela, who runs her own bakery business, said she realized he wasn’t going to finish the job when she promised to return it but never did.

“I thought, ‘Oh my god, my money’s gone, my house is damaged, my kids will suffer’,” she said.

“I just feel so disappointed, I’m so depressed. They are my children and it’s my duty to take care of them and protect them.

“They are suffering because of this.”

Adam claims that architectural plans obtained from Michaela did not mention the building on top of a sewage pipe and were only discovered when his men began excavations, which added a further £10,000 to the cost of construction and halted work.

He has insisted that he plans to return home to continue the job, but only to issue a partial refund once he has received written permission from Anglian Water, or after working out how much he is owed. Will do

‘My poor child’

Meanwhile, Michaela is left with 20,000 pounds out of pocket and the trenches where the extensions were supposed to sit, some of which are more than 9 feet deep.

He will no longer let his children, among whom there is autism, ADHD, diabetes and sensory disorders, go outside, for fear that they will knock them down.

“We have to keep the back door locked and the keys hidden because we’re so worried,” she said.

“My poor kids. They can’t even breathe air on their swing in the garden.

“As a mother, it breaks my heart to learn that I have created this mess.”

how to find a builder

  • Ask Friends/Family Colleagues for Recommendations
  • Ask builder to bring portfolio of past work
  • Don’t pay all the money upfront – most firms will agree to a payment plan, with the final payment once the job is done and you’re happy with the job.

Michaela, who moved into the property in 2012 and became owner in February 2022, is furious with Adam, but also with CheckTrade for promoting his business.

“They shouldn’t have posted his details,” she said.

“He’s got good reviews over there, so I picked him.”

Adam says he has many happy customers, and while he “feels sorry” for Michael, that’s his problem to deal with.

A spokesperson for CheckTrade said: “We regret Ms Madewell’s experience not reflecting the high standards expected of our members.

“This trader is not a member of CheckTrade since September 2021.

“While this business is no longer a member of CheckAtrade, we will continue to support Ms. Madewell, including by offering our alternative dispute resolution service.

“CheckTrade was established to stamp out this type of behavior.

“We have zero tolerance for any trader who fails to meet our high standards.”

Michaela has launched gofundme To raise money to fix up his garden.
