And not only that, but 3.7 million children have been thrown back into poverty, according to a study Columbia University,

But now Republican Senators Mitt Romney, Richard Burr and Steve Dines have sponsored a plan that would give families up to $350 per month, or up to $4,200 per year.

This would exceed the maximum benefit of $300 under last year’s temporary measure.

“Despite being the cornerstone of our nation, there has probably never been a more challenging time to raise a family than today,” said Mr. Romney.

“We must do better to help families meet the challenges they face because they do the most important job any of us will ever do – raising the children of our society.”

However, there is a catch to the Child Tax Credit which will come as a surprise to many families which was not the case in the past.

Who is eligible?

This plan looks similar to Mr Romney pitch earlier this year.

However, the updated version has more specifications regarding the task requirement.

below Family Safety Act 2.0Families must have earned at least $10,000 in the previous year to receive the full Child Tax Credit benefit.

If you earn less than this, you will get a profit “proportionate to income”.

“For example, a family earning $5,000 with a 4-year-old child would receive 50% of their $4,200 benefit because they earned 50% of their $10,000 earnings goal,” the proposal reads.

Eligible families with children under the age of six will be eligible for $350 per child.

Children between the ages of six and 17 will receive $250 per month or $3,000 per year.

Meanwhile, the earnings cap will be $200,000 for single filers and $400,000 for couples.

Above those thresholds, $50 in benefits is deducted for every $1,000.

Although it’s not clear how many will actually be eligible, data from the research firm statista shows that more than 112 million households earn less than $200,000.

Will it pass?

While three Republicans back the measure, it is unclear whether it will pass.

The thought of the need for work, in particular, has caused some unease among congressional Democrats.

“As I’ve said in the past, work requirements don’t work, as has been shown by study after study,” said Senator Michael Bennett, a Democrat from Colorado. NBC News in February.

“We shouldn’t punish children just because their families are struggling to find work, especially during a pandemic.”

But one party member disagrees – and that is Senator Joe Manchin, who describes himself as a so-called “conservative Democrat.”

really, West Virginia senator killed Popular Policies in the President Joe Biden’s Building a better agenda, including the expansion of the $3,600 child tax credit.

His rejection of the extended credit was because it did not include the work mandate.

But it is unclear whether other Democrats, including Mr Manchin, will sign on to the new child tax credit plan.
