The Pathfinder malfunction is caused by accumulation of dirt within the secondary hood latch, according to papers filed with NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

This accumulation of debris can leave the SUV’s hood open and fly up while the hood was previously closed.

NHTSA documents note that 2013-2016 Nissan Pathfinders are affected because these models use a potentially problematic Bell crank assembly.

Dust and dirt can build up around the bell crank lever pivot joint of these Pathfinders, causing hood problems.

Drivers who neglect routine 2013-2016 Pathfinder maintenance are at greater risk of experiencing the hood problem of this recall because the Bell crank assembly requires periodic inspection.

Routine technician analysis secondly allows you to see if contamination is scratching the protective anti-corrosion coating of your Bell crank.

Scratching the Bell crank’s protective anti-corrosion coating allows for corrosion of the bare metal in the axle joint, reports NHTSA.

Nissan will mail an interim notification letter to 40k of the total owners of the recall on June 30, 2022.

This interim letter will request that owners bring their Pathfinder to an authorized Nissan dealer, where they will have their car inspected and fixed free of charge if needed.

An authorized Nissan dealer can swap out broken parts with an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part that you can’t find in your corner garage.

OEM parts are designed by Nissan specifically for your car, while an outside company makes aftermarket parts to fit as many models as possible.

Nissan will send all Pathfinder recall letters by August 3, 2022.
