If your budget is stretched, here are some low-cost ways to keep young people happy.

Quiet Time: Printactivities.com has tons of free summer-themed downloads and print-at-home sets for kids who love coloring or puzzles.

Cook: Encourage budding bakers with a three-ingredient cookie recipe delish.com.

You need 70 grams of sugar, 120 grams of flour and 100 grams of butter (which you may already have) to make 12 cookies. Including the cooking time, they should take 30 to 40 minutes.

Alternatively, kids will love the Dr Otaker Solar System Cupcake Kit, £2.50 at Tesco. Or get Asda’s Unicorn Biscuit Kit for £1.75.

Animal Magic: Making a DIY bird feeder is a great low-cost activity for kids. Slice apples then dip them at Sainsbury’s in Aldi Grandessa Peanut Butter, 99p, then Sunflower Seeds, £1.10. Tie them with string to a tree branch in the garden.

grow your own: Use an old curd pot and put a ball of damp cotton. Sprinkle some cress seeds from Wilco, 45p, and place on a window sill.

Babies can add a little water daily and the cress should sprout in a day or two.

Treasure Search: It takes a little more work for the parents but also fills up a little time.

Hide a few from around the house and create a pirate-style treasure map for them to follow.

Use written clues or draw pictures to point them in the right direction – either at home or at a local park.

crown it: Hobbycraft is running a Jubilee Crown-making workshop in stores for £5.

To skip that expense, round up paper or old greeting cards and make your own crown with sticky tape and scissors. Add stickers for decoration.

My top tip is to first measure their head with a piece of wire so that you can make a crown that will fit.

challenge them: Challenge kids daily throughout the half-term. It could be the number of steps they take, the stars they jump or the toys they pick up from the floor.

Making household chores fun can be good for you too!
