Some small businesses and individuals are switching from car ownership to rental in order to save money during record-high gas prices.

This switch is currently being facilitated by apps like Udrive and Selfdrive.ae in the UAE.

Udrive is a pay-per-minute Vehicle Rental app that has experienced a growth rate of 15% gas cost passed through the roof, AGBI Report.

Udrive allows its customers to pay by the minute or by the day.

Watson’s company received $5 million in funding in 2021 and now plans to expand its services full-time Middle EastNorth Africa and Turkey in the near future, AGBI reports.

Selfdrive.ae, a subscription vehicle rental service, has seen its customer base increase by 30% month-on-month since gas prices began to rise, AGBI reports.

Soham Shah, CEO and founder of Selfdrive.ae, said: “Subscriptions, or micro-leasing as we call them, are skyrocketing, and people want on-demand rentals rather than purchases.” AGBI report

Expatriates are among the group of people who use services like Udrive most frequently during the company’s Middle East trial Gulf News Report.

But not everyone is on board with this stylistic shift in automotive transportation.

According to a Gulf News report, people with long-term plans to live in the UAE find buying a car more economical than short-term rental.

“Buying a car was always part of the plan as it makes sense if one is planning to stay in the UAE for a long time.

“The timing seemed right in 2020 as I got a good deal. After much research, I bought a 2018 model of Nissan Kicks for Dh50,000 which would cost at least Dh80,000-90,000 [$21780-$24503]”Gulf News reports.

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas is $4.857, up from last year’s $3.118, AAA Report.
