A new report from the Co-op shows that half of people under the age of 25 believe they need to leave their hometowns for better work opportunities, while a third don’t think raising the level of government His agenda will have a positive impact on his life.
Co-op’s interim CEO Shireen Khouri-Haq said: “Talent pervades every community, opportunity does not.
“Now more than ever, we need to take urgent action to tackle inequality of opportunity, leveling up for young people.”
To help youth deliver on their promise, June 16 is Social Mobility Awareness Day, where companies and charities come together to promote better work opportunities for working class and minority youth.

Will a four day week last?
Thousands of UK workers are taking part in the world’s largest four-day week of testing.
The six-month-long pilot involved 70 companies ranging from financial services providers to fish and chip shops.
Some experts have claimed that four-day weeks can help with social mobility by allowing workers to fit other responsibilities around their jobs. So how can your firm offer equal pay for fewer days of work?
Here Dr. Rita Fontinha, Associate Professor of International Business and Strategy at Henley Business School, explains how to get started.
- plan ahead. Any four-day event should have clear guidelines and management processes to maintain harmony in the workplace.
- start small. Getting started with a particular department or subsidiary for a limited time can be a good way to test the waters and assess the impact of a four-day week.
- Get employees on board. Explain the change in advance and explain why you are doing it. Make sure managers and employees are all on the same page.
- Start slow. Do not rush into decision or implementation. Each firm’s needs will be different and what works for one company may not work for you.
- Keep track of results. Match the results carefully to see the benefits. This will help with the wider roll-out and demonstrate whether it works for your firm and employees.

Start a career in TV with a new social mobility plan from Channel 4.
The network is offering over 200 paid entry-level placements including internship, apprenticeship and production training schemes.
3,000 locations are also on fast-track plans. Channel 4 Chief Executive Alex Mahone said: “Everyone should have an equal chance to follow their dreams and get jobs in the creative industries.
“It should not be about certain aptitudes but about passion and ability.”

COUNT on a new career with BDO.
The accounting giant is introducing a new week-long Virtual Insights programme, allowing young people to gain work experience from anywhere in the UK.
The curriculum is designed for students ages 11 to 13 who attend a state school and whose parents are in working-class jobs or have been unemployed for a long time.
Students who complete the course will also have the chance to secure a place in BDO’s 2023 Summer School or School Leaver Apprenticeship programs.
