What is the £300 Winter Fuel Rebate?
A £300 lump sum payment “Pensioner Cost of Living Payment” will be distributed to eight million households.
A £300 aid will be paid on top of this support – meaning eligible families will see their payments double this winter.
You are eligible for Winter Fuel Payments if:
- You were born on or before 26 September 1955
- You have been in the UK for at least one day during the week of 20 to 26 September 2021 – this is called ‘qualification week’.
You may still be eligible if you lived in Switzerland or another EEA country during that period, but you will not receive payment automatically and will have to apply.
If you can prove a substantial connection to the UK, such as whether you live and work here, or have family here, but were not living in the qualifying week, then so be it.
You will not get paid if you live in the following countries, however because of the hot weather there: Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta, Portugal or Spain.
If you are receiving free hospital treatment for more than a year and in some other circumstances you will not get paid.

When will I get the £300 discount?
In November or December this year you will get a £300 boost, the government has confirmed.
For most of the pensioner families, it will be paid through direct debit payment.
This will be added as a top up to your annual winter fuel payment, which is paid around this time.
Payment will be made directly to households – so nothing needs to be done.
